OpenAI has rolled out Study Mode for ChatGPT, a guided learning feature that encourages active thinking by prompting users with questions instead of giving instant answers. The tool became available worldwide on 29 July 2025 across the web interface and the iOS and Android apps.
How Study Mode Works
Study Mode sits alongside ChatGPT's other conversation tools and can be toggled on or off within any chat. Once activated, the assistant uses educator-designed prompts to:
- Break material into manageable segments
- Pose Socratic questions and offer concise hints
- Adapt explanations to each learner’s skill level using prior chat context
- Insert interactive quizzes to verify comprehension
Prompts were developed with educators and researchers, including Common Sense Media. OpenAI says the feature is available on Free, Plus, Pro, and Team tiers, with ChatGPT Edu access planned. The company aims to integrate Study Mode behavior into future model releases after gathering user feedback.
Why It Matters
Since ChatGPT's November 2022 debut, students have used it heavily for homework and revision. Study Mode formalizes that use case by embedding structured questioning and memory controls that store learning goals, positioning ChatGPT as a more robust educational tool.
