Google has begun rolling out AI Mode in Chrome’s desktop address bar in the United States. The update adds page-aware prompts and a right-side AI Overview panel. Details were published on Google’s official Chrome blog as part of a series of AI updates.

Google brings AI Mode to Chrome’s address bar

AI Mode launches directly from the address bar on desktop and supports follow-up questions within the same session. When invoked, Chrome surfaces prompts tailored to the page you are viewing and opens results in a right-side AI Overview.

The rollout starts in U.S. English. Google says availability will expand to more regions and languages.

Key details

  • Access: Launch AI Mode from the address bar on desktop and ask follow-up questions in the same flow.
  • Context: Prompts reflect the page you are viewing. Responses open in a right-side AI Overview.
  • Gemini in Chrome: Available on Mac and Windows in the United States. It summarizes open tabs and clarifies information across tabs.
  • Integrations: Gemini in Chrome connects with Calendar, YouTube, and Maps to pull relevant times, locations, and events.
  • Agentic capabilities: Google plans to add web task automation, including bookings and orders. Users can stop actions at any time.
  • Enterprise: Business access will roll out through Google Workspace in the coming weeks and will include enterprise-grade protections.
  • Safety: Safe Browsing now uses Gemini Nano to detect tech-support-style scams. Google plans to extend protections to fake virus alerts and fake giveaways.
  • Notifications: Chrome reduces spam site notifications and lowers intrusive permission prompts.
  • Passwords: Chrome will offer instant password changes on supported sites for compromised credentials.
  • Availability: Initial release in English in the United States. Wider availability will follow in phases.

Background context

Google grouped AI Mode, Gemini in Chrome, and new protections into a single release and described a staged rollout in its announcement. These updates are part of Google’s ongoing AI enhancements for Chrome.
