Google announced a visual search upgrade to AI Mode in Search on September 30, 2025. The update adds conversational, multimodal results and new shopping features.

What changed
AI Mode now accepts conversational queries and returns visual results you can refine with natural follow-ups.
- Start with an uploaded image or a photo. Each image result links to its source page.
- On mobile, ask follow-up questions about a specific region of an image.
- Shopping queries support natural language descriptions instead of manual filters.
- Product results include reviews, deals, colorways, and availability.
How it works
The update combines Google Lens and Image Search with Gemini 2.5. A visual search query fan-out technique runs multiple background queries to interpret image context and assemble results.
Shopping answers draw on Google's Shopping Graph, which Google says contains more than 50 billion listings. Over 2 billion product listings refresh every hour on Google.
Availability
The features are rolling out in English in the U.S. this week.
