Google has opened its Personal Intelligence feature in AI Mode to free-tier users with personal accounts in the United States. Announced in a blog post, the expansion covers Search, the Gemini app, and Gemini in Chrome. Personal Intelligence connects selected Google services so AI responses can draw on a user's own emails and photos.

Google AI Mode Personal Intelligence expansion in the U.S.

According to Google, Personal Intelligence in AI Mode is now available at no extra cost for U.S.-based personal accounts. Access applies to users signed in with standard consumer Google accounts, not Workspace-managed profiles. The feature appears inside AI Mode in Search and within related Gemini experiences.

Google says Personal Intelligence access in AI Mode is live now for eligible users. Rollout for the Gemini mobile app and Gemini in Chrome is starting and will continue over time, so availability may appear gradually across devices and platforms.

Key details and background for Personal Intelligence access

Personal Intelligence links Gmail and Google Photos with AI Mode and Gemini responses when users choose to turn it on. The feature is designed to surface information from a user's Google account during chats and searches.

  • The current update removes the previous payment requirement for U.S. users with personal Google accounts.
  • When enabled, AI Mode and Gemini can reference email confirmations, travel bookings, and saved photos to answer questions.
  • Connections to Gmail and Photos are managed in Search or Gemini settings on supported products.
  • Users can switch these connections on or off at any time through those settings.
  • The feature is not available for Google Workspace business, enterprise, or education accounts.

Google first introduced Personal Intelligence earlier this year as part of its AI Mode experience for Search. At launch, Personal Intelligence was available only to paid Gemini Advanced tiers branded AI Pro and AI Ultra, according to Search Engine Journal. AI Mode is Google's conversational interface that layers generative responses on top of traditional Search results.

With Personal Intelligence active, Gemini and AI Mode can reference a signed-in user's own content when responding, after the user enables those links. Google describes this as a way to answer questions without the user manually providing that context. The capability applies across AI Mode in Search and compatible Gemini surfaces.

Data handling and official sources

In its announcement, Google outlined how connected account data is processed for Personal Intelligence. The company says Gemini and AI Mode do not train directly on the contents of users' Gmail inboxes or Google Photos libraries.

According to Google, training is limited to:

"specific prompts in Gemini or AI Mode and the model's responses."

Google confirms that data from Gmail and Photos can still be used to generate responses while Personal Intelligence is active. The announcement focuses on U.S. personal accounts and does not include availability details for Google Workspace customers or for markets outside the United States.
