Google is rolling out Ask Maps, a Gemini-powered conversational search feature inside Google Maps, alongside a new Immersive Navigation experience for turn-by-turn guidance in the United States. Ask Maps is launching on Android and iOS in the United States and India, while Immersive Navigation is arriving first on mobile in the United States, with car integrations expected in the coming months.

Key details on Ask Maps launch

Ask Maps lets users type natural language questions directly in Google Maps and receive AI-generated suggestions shown on a personalized map. Instead of a list of links, responses combine business details, reviews, and locations into a single mapped answer.

Google said in an announcement blog post that Ask Maps draws on data from more than 300 million places and reviews from over 500 million people. The feature uses Google's Gemini models to interpret complex, real-world questions about nearby places and activities.

Example prompts from Google include finding public tennis courts with lights at night or locating places to charge a phone without long coffee lines. Ask Maps is rolling out on Android and iOS in the United States and India, with a desktop version described by Google as "coming soon."

Results are personalized using signals from a person's Google Maps activity, including past searches and saved places within the app. Google says these signals can affect which restaurants, activities, or stops appear in Ask Maps suggestions.

Key facts on Ask Maps, based on Google's announcement and press briefings:

  • Product: Ask Maps conversational search inside Google Maps, powered by Gemini
  • Availability: Rolling out on Android and iOS in the United States and India
  • Data sources: Google Maps places database and user-contributed reviews at global scale
  • Personalization: Based on prior searches and saved locations in a user's Maps history
  • Ads: No advertising products inside Ask Maps were announced at launch

The AP reported that Google executives declined to answer a question about potential paid placement within Ask Maps recommendations. Google already sells several ad formats in Maps, including promoted pins and search ads, but did not connect those products to Ask Maps in its launch communications.

Background context on Google Maps AI and navigation updates

Alongside Ask Maps, Google introduced Immersive Navigation, which adds a 3D-style view during navigation. The feature displays nearby buildings, terrain, and landmarks while driving or walking, and offers more natural voice guidance and clearer comparisons between alternate routes, including differences in tolls and traffic delays.

Google says Immersive Navigation will appear first on mobile in the United States for iOS and Android. Support for Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and cars with Google built-in will expand over the coming months. Arrival updates include Street View previews near the destination, parking suggestions, and highlighting primary building entrances.

Ask Maps builds on earlier Gemini integrations in Google Maps that focused on navigation assistance. In November, Google introduced Gemini-powered hands-free conversational driving and landmark-based directions in Maps. In January, it extended those Gemini navigation capabilities to walking and cycling routes, according to prior company blog posts.
