Google updated its AI Mode recipe results on March 4, 2026, following user feedback about meal idea searches. The changes, announced by Robby Stein, VP of Product for Google Search, adjust how recipes and links appear in search.

Key details: Google updates AI Mode recipe results

Robby Stein announced the recipe changes for AI Mode in a post on X, formerly Twitter, describing improvements to how search connects users with recipe creators. The post included an embedded video clip (pic.twitter.com/kNKTAEC0Q7) showing a user tapping dishes and opening recipe panels.

Stein stated that, starting March 4, searches for meal ideas like "easy dinners for two" support the new view. In this experience, users can tap a dish to see a short description and links to relevant recipe sites.

According to Stein, Google also plans to show cook time on more recipe results within AI Mode. He said testers found cook time information useful when deciding which dishes to prepare.

Coverage of the feature shows how the revised layout behaves for recipe queries. Screenshots demonstrate an AI-generated summary on the left side and dish images appearing lower in the AI Mode result. In this layout, the summary and any opened side panel appear within the same Google Search results page.

  • When users scroll, they see a topic section that contains recipe images functioning as clickable elements.
  • Clicking a recipe image opens a side panel on the right with a larger image and brief dish summary.
  • From this side panel, users can follow links through to the original recipe websites.
  • Search Engine Journal reported that it tested queries like "easy recipes for two" and reproduced the new recipe panel.

The report noted that, in the tested view, the interface did not clearly indicate that the dish images are clickable. It described the images as resembling decorative graphics rather than obvious links.

The screenshots shared in the report show the side panel opening next to the AI-generated summary within the same result. These observations appeared in a Search Engine Journal article by Roger Montti.

Background on AI Mode recipe feedback

Google's AI Mode has previously generated AI-composed recipes by synthesizing instructions from multiple web sources. Coverage of the feature reported that some observers labeled these combined outputs "Frankenstein recipes".

In his announcement, Stein acknowledged "feedback on recipe results in AI Mode" from users. He said Google is making changes to "better connect people with recipe creators on the web" and to add more timing details.

Stein also wrote that "we know there's more work to be done on this" regarding recipe handling, indicating that additional changes to AI Mode recipe output are planned.
